Description
Gainsborough exhibited this landscape at the 1782 annual Royal Academy exhibition. It was described in detail and praised by Sir Henry Bate Dudley in the Morning Herald, 1 May 1782: 'Mr. Gainsborough has exhibited but one Landscape - but that is his chef d'oeuvre in this line... that would have done honour to the most brilliant Claude Lorain!''
