Description
John Vere came from a family of Norwich wool weavers and merchants. He lived at Thorpe, near Norwich, and Henley, just north of Ipswich. In 1742 he was appointed a commissioner of the Salt Office by Sir Robert Walpole. He was also a Justice of the Peace and Receiver-General of the Land Tax for Norfolk. His portrait by Gainsborough is pendant to that of his wife, Mary (see 2006.006). Thomas, his father, was also portrayed by Gainsborough a couple of years after the couple
