Description
The artist John Constable (1776–1837) is said to have bought this rare example of Gainsborough’s model making in a Suffolk junkshop. It is possibly the model of “the old horse… which has peculiar merit” mentioned in one of Gainsborough’s obituaries. Gainsborough often included working horses in both his drawings and oil paintings.
